DHS Releases "NIEM First" Memo

David P. Pekoske, Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Deputy Secretary, of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) signed the "NIEM first" memorandum on May 3rd, 2019 outlining the Department's adoption of the National Information Exchange Model (NIEM).

Call for NBAC Co-Chair Nomination

Winners of the 2018 Best of NIEM awards were announced at this year's annual NIEM Business Architecture (NBAC) meeting in Arlington, Virginia.  The Best of NIEM Awards recognize teams or individuals for going above and beyond in collaborating, demonstrating measurable results, and furthering an efficient and effective government in their use of NIEM.  This year four teams were awarded for:

NIEM Version 4.1 is Now Available

​NIEM version 4.1 and its associated products are now available for download and use. Products include NIEM XML schemas (XSD), a spreadsheet (MS Excel) of all data components in the model, and alternate database formats (MS Excel, MS Access, and CSV). This release is the latest version of the NIEM common vocabulary that enables efficient information exchange across diverse public and private organizations.

Best of NIEM 2018 Call for Nominations

The Best of NIEM Awards recognize teams or individuals for going above and beyond in collaborating, demonstrating measurable results, and furthering an efficient and effective government in their use of NIEM. Nominations are open to teams or individuals representing federal, state, local, tribal, and private sector organizations, both domestic or international.

NBAC Kicks Off Emerging Technologies Tiger Team

The NIEM Business Architecture Committee (NBAC) will kick off an Emerging Technologies Tiger Team (ET3) on Thursday, May 17, 2018, 1-2pm (US - Eastern). ET3 will focus on the impact of new technologies on interoperability and the adoption, utilization and evolution of NIEM.

JSON Guidance Documentation Now Available

Attention JSON developers, NIEM developers, data scientists, and anyone considering using NIEM for your next data exchange project: Guidance and documentation on adopting Javascript Object Notation (JSON) as a second standard format for representing data based on the NIEM data model is now available at https://niem.github.io/json/. Its a a whole new way to use NIEM!

NIEM 4.1 Beta Now Available for Public Review and Comment

The NIEM Program is pleased to release NIEM 4.1 Beta1 for public review and comment. To ensure that the final NIEM 4.1 best meets users’ evolving needs, we are calling on the NIEM Community to review NIEM 4.1 Beta1 and share feedback by April 20, 2018.

NIEM 4.1 will be a minor release that incorporates content identified since NIEM 4.0 was released in July 2017. The NIEM release cycle allows us to make NIEM model updates on a predictable and sustainable schedule.

Health Information Technology Standards and NIEM

The Federal Health Architecture (FHA) team has recently dedicated resources to advance alignment between NIEM and the standards commonly used for health information technology (HIT) exchanges. This may also include support for fostering a health-oriented inter-disciplinary community of interest to help guide and potentially govern Health Domain data model content in NIEM.

The NIEM Program is excited to announce the release of Movement, a new open-source tool that makes it easier to access and interact with the NIEM model.

Inspired by your feedback, we created Movement to provide users with additional tooling to accelerate their NIEM implementations. The beta version of Movement is now available.

All feedback on NIEM 4.0 beta1 is in! We are now entering the release candidate stage. This is the final stage before we officially release NIEM 4.0 into production.

Public review and comment of NIEM 4.0 beta1 is now complete. To ensure the final NIEM 4.0 release meets users’ evolving needs, the NIEM Program requested and received feedback from domain stewards, technical subject matter experts, and the NIEM community at large.

The NIEM Biometrics Domain (NBD) is proud to announce John Boyd, Assistant Director, Futures Identity of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) National Protection and Programs Directorate (NPPD) Office of Biometric Identity Management (OBIM) as the new Chair of the NIEM Biometrics Domain.

NIEM Showcased at 2017 Biometrics in Government and Law Enforcement Event

On January 23, the 11th annual Biometrics for Government and Law Enforcement Conference was once again held in Arlington, Virginia. The three-day conference featured speakers and event attendees from multiple organizations, including the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Department of Defense (DOD), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Interpol and many others discussing a variety of topics related to information exchange within the biometrics and identity management community.
